By 1853, the first families began moving into the Kimball Hill development. The development was named Rolling Meadows and 700 homes were sold by 1955. Kimball Hill donated $200 per home sold so that a school system could be built for the residents of Rolling Meadows. By 1955, Rolling Meadows was incorporated as a city. Rolling Meadows began a boom in the 1950s and 1960s as new businesses started moving into the area. The largest department store in the area was opened in 1957. The store closed in 1994. In 1958 a large Industrial Park was opened in the area employing over 1,500 workers. Apartment buildings sprung up and by 1970, 35% of the structures in Rolling Meadows were multifamily dwellings. By 2000, Helene Curtis and Charles Industries established a presence in Rolling Meadows making it an intricate part of the Golden Corridor.
