Mount Prospect is a suburb of Chicago that is located approximately 22 miles Northwest of downtown Chicago. Mount Prospect is in Cook County. It has a very diverse population of over 54,000 people. The original inhabitants of the area encompassing the current Mount Prospect were very diverse as well. The original inhabitants were Native Americans and early Yankee settlers. They cleared the land and established farms. A second group of German immigrants moved into the area. The German immigrants had a significant impact on what is now Mount Prospect.
In 1858 a train station was built in the area. Others built stores and houses in the area surrounding the train station. The train began to stop in Mount Prospect. That's when the Village of Mount Prospect began. The population of Mount Prospect began increasing in the 1920's and in the era following World War II when people began moving into the Suburban areas surrounding Chicago.
In the early 1960's The Village took a huge step forward when the Randhurst Mall was built. At the time, the Randhurst Mall was the first indoor air-conditioned Mall in the Upper Midwest. And the 1990's the downtown area began to be redeveloped. Many modern buildings were built which change the look and feel of the downtown area. Today, Mount Prospect is a combination of residential developments, schools, churches, parks, and a modern Library. And 2017, Mount Prospect will be celebrating its 100th anniversary of The Villages Incorporation.
