Addison was originally started by German settlers. Addison was originally known as Dunklee's Grove. It contained a general store, a cobbler's shop, and a blacksmith shop. The residents of Addison realized that the festival was so popular that it was necessary to build a railroad to Addison. In 1890, five citizens of Addison formed the Addison Railroad Company. The Addison Railroad Company entered into an agreement with the Illinois Central Railroad to build and maintain a rail line going to Addison. The train to Addison resulted in the attendance for the Orphan Festival to double.
In 1953, developer Anthony Ross build Normandy Manor on 40 acres of land that he had acquired. The subdivision became known as Green Meadows and it offered single family homes and a shopping center. The population of Addison grew from 813 in 1950 to 35,914 by 2000.
In 1960, the Addison Industrial Commission was formed. By the 1980s, The Village began developing an Industrial Park for office research and Industrial Development. By 1987 the Addison Industrial Park had over 1000 firms located in the Industrial Park. Today, the largest employers in Addison are United Parcel Service, the Pampered Chef, and Unisource.
