Addison is a village located west of Chicago in DuPage County. Addison is part of the Chicago Metropolitan Area. Addison is home to about 38,000 people. The area was originally started by German settlers. Addison was originally known as Dunklee's Grove. It contained a general store, a cobbler's shop, and a blacksmith shop. Stagecoaches regularly stopped to change horses along what is now known as Lake Street. By the 1840s, the area was full of German newcomers. By 1860, a Lutheran training school opened in Addison. In 1874 the Evangelical Lutheran Church built an orphanage in Addison to train Seminary students and give them teaching experience. The orphaned children would remain in the orphanage until they turned 14 years old where they were taught trades and sent to work with local families in the area.
My 1877 the orphanage help an Orphan Festival, which later became known as the Kinderheim picnic. The festival drew very large crowds. The residents of Addison realized that the festival was so popular that it was necessary to build a railroad to Addison. In 1890, five citizens of Addison formed the Addison Railroad Company. The Addison Railroad Company entered into an agreement with the Illinois Central Railroad to build and maintain a rail line going to Addison. The train to Addison resulted in the attendance for the Orphan Festival to double.
In 1953, developer Anthony Ross build Normandy Manor on 40 acres of land that he had acquired. The subdivision became known as Green Meadows and it offered single family homes and a shopping center. The population of Addison grew from 813 in 1950 to 35,914 by 2000.
In 1960, the Addison Industrial Commission was formed. By the 1980s, The Village began developing an Industrial Park for office research and Industrial Development. By 1987 the Addison Industrial Park had over 1000 firms located in the Industrial Park. Today, the largest employers in Addison are United Parcel Service, the Pampered Chef, and Unisource.
