Bensenville is a residential community that is located in the northeast corner of DuPage County. Bensenville is located next to O'Hare Airport and is only 17 miles west of the Chicago Loop. Bensenville has evolved into a important residential community that is located next to O'Hare Airport.
Bensenville was original originally settled by two farmers from New England. By 1835, German immigrants, fleeing political problems in Europe, settled in the area. The original settlers and immigrants raised dairy and wheat products. They would take their products to Chicago by using routes along Irving Park Road and Grand Avenue. A stagecoach connecting Elgin to Chicago traveled past what is now Irving Park Road. In 1849, the Galena and Chicago Union Railroad was established contributing to the growth of the population in the area.
Bensenville began to be established as a suburb in the 1870s when three individuals purchased, and divided, the land that would become modern-day Bensenville. The Chicago, Milwaukee and St Louis Railroad began regular service from Chicago and Elgin and established a stop in the Bensenville area. On May 10, 1884, Bensenville was incorporated as a Village. The first school was built in 1886 and a drainage system was constructed in 1887. Population growth in Bensenville was slow. By 1940, Bensenville only had a population of 1869 people.
Bensenville's connection to airplanes began in 1940 when the Federal Government established an aircraft factory to manufacture cargo planes outside of Bensenville. The aircraft plant operated from 1943 to 1945. In 1846, the City of Chicago purchased the factory so they could start to develop a large airport just outside of Chicago. This is when Bensenville's struggles with Chicago began. Since Chicago needed more land to build the airport, Chicago began annexing land in unincorporated DuPage County to build the airport. Bensenville sued Chicago to stop the land grab but lost in Court. O'Hare Airport began domestic flights in 1955.
The arrival of O'Hare Airport led to the dramatic increase in the population of Bensenville. By the 1950s, Bensenville's population had doubled. By 1960, Bensenville's population tripled. O'Hare Airport led to the expansion of the residential areas in Bensenville. That's when the noise complaints started. The O'Hare Area Noise Abatement Council was established in 1969 to address the residents noise complaints.
Today, Bensenville remains a vibrant and thriving community that is an important suburb of Chicago. The community has a solid residential community with restaurants and grocery stores to serve the residents in the community.
